City Of God - HOMEWORK 2

Narrative

City of God uses narrative in a complex way, manipulating the timeframe, and using a narrator to lead the audience through the film. The narratir is inside the narrative narrating in the first person. The narrative doesn’t fall easily into the usual theory. There is certainly three parts to the film which is start, middle and end. The start of the film is after all sequence that actually heralds the end of the film , and apart from being a dramatic sequence that serves to engage the audience, but is show an understanding of the changed circumstances of the city, and makes the antics of the Tender Trio look rather tame compared with the later action.

The audience is introduced to the characters and their backgrounds when they were younger. In the middle of the film there is a flash back through the characters younger years in the 1970's and 1980's to the present day. Comparing how they were then to how they are now. The themes in the film City Of God are Jealousy, violence, poverty, revenge, loyalty, fiends, betrayal and morals. The portrayal throughout the film is that the gangsters are always after each other's businesses, money and drugs. The main genre for the gangster film is violence. The themes in the City Of God such as violence show if you use violence you might get a power over some one or either business.

Genre

The film genre for City of God is Gangster. The Genre is established through the motel scene in the middle of the film. There is a sense of realism throughout the film due to the use of location and the use of children when they are fighting or committing another act of violence.

The characters don't have a good education and they struggle is shown through the different characters lifestyles which my by coused by drugs, weapons and violence in the family or in the area that they live.  The genre is made clear to the audience through the use of a narrator and the subtitles on the screen which explains the place or the year when this has happend also use of violence, language and drugs, personalities portrayed through the characters, gang wars.

Target Audience

The target audience for film City Of God is 18+ because of the content of drugs, sex, guns and violence. The gender of the target audience would be mainly male because the use of violence, guns and cars and sex and nudity.

The techniques which are used to target the audience are drugs, sex, power, crime, guns, blood, violence, strong language and also the Portuguese which is the language of the film, for people who might understand this language and get a content of the film more clearly than people who don't speak Portuguese and things that they translate on the screen might mean something different than what they said in Portuguese.

Violence

The use of Violence in the film City Of God was when Lil'Dice kills the people at the motel people who didn't do anything bad to him, Steak is forced to kill the two defenceless boys by Lil'Ze and Benny's Death. Also when Lil'Ze rapes knockout Ned's girl, Shorty kills/ murders his wife and Steak kills the boy because of Lil'Ze. The film would not be the same or rather it would not have the same effect on the audience because violence drives the movie forward. It is more violence in City Of God than in Scarface depends to the actors doing it. Also one thing to comparision to Scarface it's kids who are doing the killing not the adults and this what make more interesting than Scarface but in Scarface you have follow the plot if not you will lose the content of the film.

Representation

Violence is the main theme and is portrayed through the characters struggles and desperation. The City of God is portrayed through violence and sex. Women are seen as objects and are viewed in a sexual way.

Also the representation of Drugs Culture in the film, the Drug Culture in City of God is very much seen as the norm, whether it be to those who purchase drugs or who are the dealers. It is represented as a common trade in which sales are made daily as evident by Tiago and Rocket purchasing drugs in a fashion that is quickly glossed over, as if it were nothing. The scenes in City of God show the power attached to Drug Culture could include in which Rocket explains the chain command in regards to the selling of drugs, but the Benny entrance with his new image to a room of individuals in Lil' Ze's employs, all working in the manufacture of drugs and this is very important in the film because to consider that the WAR which is happening is between two gangs or to biggest lords is for further control the city and thus the drugs trade in the City of God.

Also what the last thing I want to say in the City of God represents someone from the area rather than the representation of their race. The people who lived in the Slum were the black poor people but in the town lived more white/ Brazilian people showing that they had more money. The children in the City of God are represented as violent and unruly also desperate  for power which they got by killing and stealing.

TASK 4D - Recording a voiceover EVALUATION - Shrek " Are We there YET

Evaluation - Shrek are we there Yet

For this task we have been put into pairs and then have to decide what scene we are going to do. ,My group choose a scene from film Shrek and it is a scene call "Are we there yet?"

The first step was to download a movie/clip from YouTube, then we have to watch it and choose the part we want to do and what going to record mean (ADR) Automated dialogue replacement or voice over.

We have to find a script on the Internet for that particular scene and then we have record the dialogue on to voice recorders.

Before recording dialogue we have to find a place to record where there not is no any echo like (roomy) etc.

The Type of microphone used is a diagetic microphone. After the recording, we drag all the files into folders, then we have edited on Reaper64.

I split the sound tracks into parts and we choose the best quality recording. Then we have to compress the sound track in Reaper and plus normalise

This picture shows the Fx option highlighted in green by clicking it would allow us to edit our sound tracks, In Fx you will have plently of different options for example using a VST ReaComp cockos will compress our tracks, also in pairs we compress tracks for different ways, such as different volume levels,  because compression reduces the peak levels of the signal, you can increase the gain on attack without causing distortion and you have to becareful what settings you choosing on plugins "FX".

To compress the soundtrack what I have to add the FX plugin which is call Cockos and select the option call VST: ReaComp (Cockos) this picture show before we compress the sound track

ADR - Automated dialogue replacement

This picture is showing the settings I have choosen. Compressing the sound track means it makes sound much move even in volume.

During our editing on Reaper we also normalized our audio recordings that is bringing the highest to volume to 0db

We used normalising in our work to get the maximum volume when our recording was a little bit quite, and we also used this method to balance our recordings volume.

After successful rendering our group work we then transformed it into Garageband to be able to synchronize the sound with the visuals from Shrek are we there yet ADR.

In Garage band we are able to edit our audio to a certain limit with the visuals presence so we can see if the whole production is synced.

Through listening to our work on "Garageband" we noticed that some elements we're distorted so we have to rerecord again and we have to check if everything is fine with dialogue and voices and after rerecording we have to do everything step by step.

The outcome of my finished scene, I was very happy that I finished my shrek scene because the recording synchronize with the animation plus was very funny. The tips to improve is to spend more time on recording and check three times before we start edit if the voices are fine or not, also what should be improved is  the way we repeat the dialogue what I mean by that is to try to record in different tempo, faster or slower and also try to change the tone and mood of voices.

In my conclusion for this task was very good experience to try to do voice over (ADR of a cartoon and any different type of film or animation. Also the positive points about the scene was everything was SYNC and well planed and negative side was it to spend more time on recording voice over and try to edit in different way what I mean is to change the voice pitch to different levels, in my shrek scene I done that but I will done it in better very if I spend more time on editing

1 - Homework - SCARFACE (1983)

Narative
The narrative of the story is single strand seeing as the story focuses on Tony the main protagonist who is surrounded by other characters. Even though there are multiple antagonists who attempt to get in the Tony way but the narrative keeps the focus only on Tony and his adventures, that is going on in the story. The narrative can also be described as linear as the events that transpire happen in a straight line from start to end. Tony's rise and downfall. There are no flashbacks, within the film it's just as you see it though there are time lapses used to show events that happen over the period or either a half. The ending of the story can be described as closed seeing as Tony Montana is shot from the back and killed, but even Tony has been shot many times but he was still alive because of the drugs he taken, he was trying to show that he will not give up even he was heart, and the ending story of Scarface has been show very closely and very understandable to the audience.

Genre
Codes and conventions used which are locations for example ghetto/wealthy areas good vs bad. Also the another convenction which was used in Scareface was revenge, power, illegal dealing/activity weapons, guns, drugs, money, murder, gangs for example mayia, triacls and bripod.
Scarface main convention was chracters nick names everyone in the film has a nick names and all we can see all characters has a long black coats, minorities.

Suits, the areas they live or the city and this is another convection which show they power and how much money they will have for example how they are dressed in the film.

Representation
Scarface is an excellent film which shows case how women and men are generally portayed in gangster films, in Scarface there are possitives and negatives surrounding the representation of women and men through the characters that we are given to learn about. The first point is that we are given the stereotypes of things in general and how we should look at them and what we should believe. Things like money means power and women are objects and showcased in Scarface is immigrants are lazy however the juxtaposition is that Tony worked very hard to get where he is now and this help us to understand that hard work sometimes pays off.

The females the main representation is the fact that in the film they are mostly being sexual objects and they are all rely on the guys to satisfy their needs, which Scarface is their main habits and rich lifestyle for example, Gina who is Tony (AL Pacino) sister she is confident and in the film she is looking a model role that is why she looks for rich guys and she goes to the club to find one but her brother was in the same club where Tony saw her and she get in to trouble. The being the dependant in the film she is treated like a child by tony which she hates very much and it also she is controlled by her mother because her mother also thinks that she is to very young and doesn't need to be exposed by the outside world. When the film progresses she becomes somewhat of a comparising of Tony being that he was at one point an OK person what I mean by that he wasn't as violent. As the film progressed she became more serious in he field of work, same as how his sister Gina changed from being innocent and then towards the end we see how she because rebellious towards her mother and Tony, through the film she like as Tony took revenge on her fiances killer (Tony) by trying to kill him. Gina as being shot by rebeillion Tony got killed.

What I want to show that women in the film can be as well very weak but when it come to there lovers and revenge they will take it to the next level of avenging which diminished the whole general represenatation of female

Target Audience
the target audience would be males the main protagonist, 18 and over due to the violence, drug use and sexual references, as well as the language within the film and the documentary about it too, as it is quite strong and inappropriate for a younger audience. However I feel that when it was released in the 80's it would have been aimed at an older audience, because back then the themes of violence and drugs, and also the gang culture were not so prominent and as much of an issue as they were today, and from what was shown on the television and in films back then, it was a really strong film in relation to the violence used, whereas now it is mild compared to what we are used to seeing, so it is not as big of a deal. The lifestyle of the characters would appeal more to a male audience for example women, drugs and money.

Violence

The Violence is the main theme conveyed in the film, though mise-en-scene and content which includes amount of deaths in the film or it mean in which wealth is acquired, an examples for this include the rioting caused by Tony (AL Pacino) and Manny in order to kill the lawyer to obtain green cards in United States and the gang Franks gang affiliates death at the hands of the Colombian dealers (drugs, money etc) . With violence being present from the beginning right through to the end of the film one can end that the core of the narrative is very violence, as without this element there would be no story, no Scareface and this is true because the violence is the main theme and the main element od the film without violence in the film there will be nothing interesting

Scareface audience

I think the target audience is 18+ because and is mostly male dominating part of the audience.

Because film has, guns , blood, drugs, money, mafia(gangs) why I am thinking because only male will have the big business, money and guns to show the power, and because I believe it would be different at time of release in comparison to this generation. Additionally through watching the film use of violence is a major factor, such as the constant use of drugs and murdering people to show they power and what they can do.

The Scareface also attracts outs audience through the themes of Power, money and women and drugs which are male dominated themes and topics (showing that is audience is males)

Scareface audience

DAVE Homework - Sound effects

http://soundbible.com/1767-15-Thousand-People.html
This sound effect that I can use to my film trailer for example when the panic wreaks around the Vatican city of Italy I can use when people are running away from danger

This sound I can use to huge chaos in dramatic moments when people are fighting to survive

This sound effect is very good for my film trailer because when you can see lot of cars around the city and you can see how the car are destroyed by nature and fall into the abyss

This sound effect can be used when the car in my film trailer trying to turn left or right to speed up a car engine

Audience Feedback - Homework

 1.  Why audience feedback is important for the development and production process of a film poster.

To ensure poster is appealing to the right audience and to appeal to wider audience, also it helps the producers to understand the audience needs better and also audience feedback includs complains and anything that can be changed.

 2.  Methods of gaining audience feedback, including complaints
The methods to gaining audience feedback can be used a questionnaire to find out what they think?, they reviews meaning comments what they think about the film poster the positive feedback etc, Interviews to find a real commentry what they think straight about the film poster and they feelings.

 3.  Examples of advantages and disadvantages

Advantages of audience feedback that you can find things that can be improved or change, also is to know what audience want to have in this poster etc

Disadvantages of audience feedback is a criticism of the film poster mean the nagative and bad things about the film poster what they don't like and what must to be change to look better.
